I have used it for a long weekend trip as a carry-on and on the trail several times. I have the REI Ruckpack 28 Recycled Day Pack and love the features. Thoughts? Other suggestions? Thanks for the help!Ī year and a half ago I narrowed my choices down to the same choices you did. The Osprey (with its clamshell design) seems like it might be the better personal item bag for trips, but I'm not sure if the clamshell design works as well for hiking. I live in Southern California (so heat is definitely an issue, but I rarely have to deal with rain). If this backpack was able to replace them, that would be a nice little bonus, but not necessary. Neither are particularly comfortable, but either works. Right now, I use either an old computer backpack or a messenger style computer bag. I mostly work from home, but commute 1-2 days a week. Much, much lower on the priority list, it would be nice if I can also use it as a laptop carrier for work. Nothing crazy elaborate, but with myself and two kids, I need a little space and I want it to be comfortable on my back for 2-3 hours. I do a lot of short hikes with my kids and need a pack that I can put a couple of water bottles in, some food, sunscreen, sunglasses, an extra layer or two of clothing, and a geocache kit. Works as a short-to-medium distance hiking pack. For long trips, it may be in addition to a suitcase, but for a 2-3 day get-away, it would likely be my only bag. I was hoping to spend around $100, but there's some wiggle room there.

I think I have my next backpack narrowed down to the Osprey Daylite 26 + 6 or the REI Ruckpack 28.
